(17) video shoot in leeds.. yesterday I returned from 3 awesome days in leeds where i've been shooting a video for 'garden grow' together with ashley, kevin, danny, tim, jan and john. director ashley dean and scenographer kevin roper together with ashleys mom and dad, jan & john, did the most fabulous setting of strange trees and phenomenal little creatures! this is the story that ashley have made from the lyrics of garden grow - enjoy! Garden Grow by Our Broken Garden The video a lush visualisation of a garden forest, filled with set pieces for Anna to perform against and interact with. Taking visual cues from the Muppet show, Fraggle Rock and Princess Mononoke, the forest will be other-worldly and filled with a beguiling mix of dark and innocent characters. They will be brought to life with puppetry, animation, camera tricks and very light touches of post-production. A series of set and character details are revealed in the first few bars; a furry hand strums a bass guitar string, a hoof thumps a drum skin growing out of a tree. Evil looking snake-like creatures (Snaps) bite the air with razor sharp teeth and a foot made from tree roots taps along with the beat. Anna is asleep in an alcove made from twigs and twine. Her eyes move behind her eyelids, then her lips come to life as she sings ‘Rip out my heart...’ Anna has been resting inside the belly of a huge forest creature (Torokun); 7 feet of fur and vines, it looks quite content as Anna climbs out of the hole in its centre. It even taps its gnarled, vine covered hand to the beat of the song. In a nearby tree, there are a dozen or so glass pods encased in the bark. One of the pods contains a beating heart in a clear liquid, the rest are filled with clear, red and deep green liquids, some contain odd looking subdued creatures and gently swaying strange plants. During the first few lines of the song, we are introduced to the whole scene; a stage set filled with myriad flora and fauna, all of it both alien and familiar. Ferns with hundreds of red, blinking eyes, various forms of fungi with frowns and smiles, large dragon flies and small birds fly past, there is always something moving and enchanting in the frame. Red apples hang from the ceiling with crystalline lattices for skins. There are a couple of tree trunks in the fore ground, filled with the glass pods and pieces of percussion. There are many layers of decoration, the foreground is framed by silhouettes of the weird undergrowth. We see the rest of Our Broken Garden; Moogie is a form of eagle owl, living in a nest along side four vines to play as bass strings. Soren is spider-esque. The fibers of his red jumper fray at the bottom to become the start of his web, the rest of the strands are made from guitar strings. He has an ornate bow on hand to play the strings. Poul is half hidden behind a tree, he has antlers and hooves and constantly thumps away at the drums and cymbals embedded in the bark of his tree. Anna stands in the centre of all the strange life, singing lyrics at the camera and smiling at her forest friends. Vines on the floor start to wrap around her ankles, but she doesn’t seem to mind. By the time she sings ‘In here among the dead’ the camera has dropped beyond the floor (which contains a few hunched little white creatures, examining the expanding vines and ticking off things on checklists). Under the ground is a rickety mine full of the white hunched creatures (The Pale Moles), all turning handles to tease the vines from deep within the earth. They blink and look exhausted, but they are determined and consistent. Back on the surface, we have an extreme close up of Anna’s mouth singing ‘Make my lips bleed...’ A slight trace of blood is visible on her bottom lip, but when we see a wider shot of the scene, we realise the forest is bleeding more than Anna. Red liquid is dripping into the glass pods, red light is playing in the background trees and the apples are glistening red. Then Anna swoons and falls to the floor (there is a crash mat to fall on behind the scenery). the Snaps lunge at her, but are just out of reach. There are a few Pale Moles dotted around floor. They examine Anna curiously and note things down on their clipboards. Soon, apples descend from the ceiling and surround Anna’s head and body. She sings ‘Just wake me from my sleep...’ with her eyes closed and the apples quiver. Her eyes open on ‘Oh...’ and the apples flinch upwards in surprise. They glide back up to their original hight as Anna stands, then they light up as she touches them to the notes of the piano. Anna returns to the centre of the set and the band all play at once. She raises her arms for ‘Garden Grow’ and we see details of vines increasing their growth rate, the liquid in glass pods becomes agitated and all of the creatures raise their heads. For the second ‘Garden Grow’ we see the whole set at once for the first time, alive in every corner with movement and growth. There are more shots of detailed growth, ev Blood on the Dance Floor Tribute Quilt The quilt is a stretch for me in that I don't normally work with such bright colors. The background greyish white-blues is hopefully close to that backdrop of the video. I also was able to incorporate a piece of the fabric I bought on June 25th that now must find a place in every tribute quilt for Michael. In this quilt the fabric's wrong side works out very well, but one piece was allowed to stay right side out. I also added a couple animal prints that represent the animal print furniture in the video. Somehow I'd still like to add the beads.
